Two populations of small intestines (SIO)



  • View:
    Lateral and VD

  • Defining characteristics:
    Distension of a portion of the small intestine with a concurrent (more) normal population of the small intestine

  • Common differential diagnoses:
    Mechanical obstruction, functional ileus, enteritis

  • Helpful additional data:
    Does the patient eat things it shouldn't, plastic/hair ties, etcetera. Has there been any vomiting?

  • Commonly associated diagnostics:
    Consider *SignalCare MDB, consider abdominal ultrasound if available, serial radiographs

  • Commonly associated treatments:
    Consider IV fluids with serial radiographs, consider the rest of the physical exam and clinical findings, and discuss surgical options

    Based on primary
