Defining characteristics: An abnormal result signals the presence of soft tissue swelling or thickening of soft tissue. Soft tissue swelling/thickening may be secondary to trauma, hemorrhage, edema, or other dermal pathologies such as infection, inflammation, or infiltrative disease.
Common differential diagnoses: hematoma, hemorrhage, edema, or other causes
Helpful additional data: Has any pain been noted during ambulation, any heat, swelling, discomfort noted in the area?
Commonly associated diagnostics: A thorough orthopedic and neurologic evaluation.
