  • Defining characteristics:
    An abnormal result signals the presence of soft tissue swelling or thickening of soft tissue. Soft tissue swelling/thickening may be secondary to trauma, hemorrhage, edema, or other dermal pathologies such as infection, inflammation, or infiltrative disease.

  • Common differential diagnoses:
    hematoma, hemorrhage, edema, or other causes

  • Helpful additional data:
    Has any pain been noted during ambulation, any heat, swelling, discomfort noted in the area?

  • Commonly associated diagnostics:
    A thorough orthopedic and neurologic evaluation.

  • Commonly associated treatments:
    Analgesics, joint supplements, modification of lifestyle 

  • Commonly associated home care:
    Hot/cold compression therapy, ramps, non-slip flooring, cage rest, etc.
